Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan
Overview
The purpose of the study is to identify policies and activities that
increase the use, safety, and convenience of bicycling and walking in
Connecticut’s South Western Region and to promote bicycling and walking
as integral components of the Region’s multi-modal transportation
system.
Primary project objectives are as follows:
- To
establish bicycle and pedestrian policies that provide a framework
for local and regional planning;
- To actively
involve federal, state, and local stakeholders in the development of
the regional bicycle and pedestrian plan;
- To educate
federal, state, and local policy-makers, as well as the general
public, about the benefits of incorporating bicycles and pedestrians
into transportation improvement projects;
- To focus
attention on creating Safe Routes to School;
- To
encourage healthier lifestyles that include bicycling and walking;
- To address
pedestrian safety issues important to older adults;
- To identify
hazardous locations for cyclists and pedestrians through the
collection and analysis of accident data and develop projects to
enhance safety at the identified locations;
- To identify
regional bicycle and pedestrian priorities and recommend specific
projects for implementation over a 20-year period.
The plan will be
developed over a period of approximately eighteen months. The completed
plan will recommend policies and prioritize projects that increase the
use, safety, and convenience of bicycling and walking in the Region.
The public is encouraged to provide input and feedback on the study’s
findings and proposals.
