Freight Overview

Overview

The purpose of the study is to identify key elements of the freight transportation system in South Western Connecticut, describe the movement of goods through Region, and to recognize the safe, efficient, and economical movement of goods as an integral component of the Region’s multi-modal transportation system.

Primary project objectives are as follows:

  • To document freight transportation policies, plans, and initiatives at the federal, state, regional, and local level;
  • To identify key freight infrastructure, generators, and consumers in the Region;
  • To analyze freight-related data including truck traffic, commercial vehicle accident locations, and freight flows into and out of the region by commodity and mode;
  • To educate federal, state, regional, and local policy-makers, as well as the general public, about the benefits of considering freight in transportation planning and transportation improvement projects.

The completed plan inventories and describes open space in the Region according to commonly accepted definitions, list grant programs that can support open space acquisition, and identify organizations operating in the region with the ability to manage and maintain open space.  The public is encouraged to provide input and feedback on the study’s findings and proposals.
